In case anyone’s interested, this is Fred Stone and Dave Montgomery in the 1902-1903 Broadway musical of “The Wizard of Oz”, one of the biggest hits of the era. It made them both stars, and even 35 years later, people complained to MGM, “Who’s this Ray Bolger guy? How dare you give the role of the Scarecrow to anyone but Fred Stone?” (Montgomery had died in the meantime.) The movie had almost nothing to do with the old musical, except that both derived from the same book, and both used a snowstorm in the poppy scene. (In the book, Dorothy is simply carried away, and the Lion is rescued by an army of field mice.)
