Hmm, perhaps…I know I’ve learned a lot about European and Asian geography by playing RTS computer games, which are based on wars.
Quote’s mangled, but I believe it was Ambrose Bierce, not Twain.
Yeah… Twain was an atheist.
Sadly, this is so untrue. Most Americans have learned nothing about geography and still don’t know where Iraq is on a map.
Just a couple days ago I had to explain to 2 of my co-workers how it is possible to drive from California to Alaska. Apparently they didn’t realize that Alaska is somehow connected to this massive landmass called Canada ::facepalm::
Not to mention learning the fact “America: Only Nation Which Matters”.
But would people from other countries be able to find, say, Delaware on a map of the US?
Why would we? It’s not a seperate country.
Most americans cant find Delaware on a map of the US =| (I’m American btw, just being honest)
Schools focus more on american stuff like history…..all the information on the world history are like foot notes…. When I was in elementary and middle school there was barely a chapter on europe or africa… We like to think we are free but we are very isolated and closed off from the world, its scarey once you realize all the information that we are not given.
Ahh the third world nations attack america.
Using an american.
What is the mans name in the photo? (to all non americans)
Only thing i can say to you crap hole countries is this;
Jealous Much!
Errr… no. Quote by an American, attributed (wrongly, as it turns out) to an American, in a LOL created by an American, and posted to an American site.
Thankfully, this just goes to show that not all Americans conform to the stereotype of the faux-patriotic, unselfcritical oaf that you so unfortunately portray in your own comment.
sad but true…wish we still had writers of twains caliber in this country…or people who read books…the wal-martians are taking over
This^
Before I retired from being a federal lawman, I taught how to be one. Among other things, I taught about supply lines of illegal drugs imported into the United States.
That includes global geography.
I’ve met kollige grajuates who could not reliable differentiate Africa from Asia; who ‘knew’ Russia was Siberia; and who were not real clear on the difference between Mexico and South America.
To be fair, most of those people to whom I refer went to school in California. Which explains a lot of ignorance.
I did a quick search on line. The quote is attributed to Mark Twain.
However, Ambrose Bierce is credited with “War is God’s way of teaching Americans geography.”
The two were contemporaries and neither were above ‘borrowing’ a phrase.
Nor is there any reason to believe Ambrose Bierce was anything but a functional atheist, based upon his writings and philosophy. If I recall correctly, Twain mentioned God as if He were real and in general acted as if He were not.
Then again, most men – and women – have different opinions on issues in various stages of life. It seems Ambrose Bierce disappeared and died in Mexico without leaving any details of his passing. By the time of his death, Bierce may have been a devout believer. Or not.
he also said never do today what you can put off until tomorrow… don’t know what that has to do with this though
